What Is Paint Protection Film?
Paint protection film, or PPF, is a clear polyurethane film applied to your vehicle’s painted surfaces. It acts as a sacrificial layer: rock chips, road debris, and light scratches hit the film instead of your factory paint.
Quality film has a self-healing topcoat, so minor swirls and scratches can disappear with heat. I plot patterns for edge-to-edge alignment as much as I can, so the result looks like part of the car, not a sticker on top of it. Wondering how it compares to a coating? Read my PPF vs. ceramic coating guide. Already have film? See my PPF aftercare guide.
Why MiracleCoat? I’m a MiracleCoat authorized installer, and it’s the film I reach for first because of its clarity and its tough, self-healing topcoat. It also comes with a 10-year warranty (see the details). A film that looks clean on day one and stays clean is the whole point, so I don’t install bargain film.
Film options: clear film in 7.8 mil or 8.8 mil. The thicker 8.8 mil adds extra impact resistance and is best for vehicles that get abused, like off-roaders and work trucks. Because it is thicker it does not conform as well, which can mean extra seams or less coverage on curved areas than the 7.8 mil. For most drivers, the thinner 7.8 mil is the better choice. Color PPF in 7.8 mil, and windshield film in 6.5 mil. Not sure which fits? Tell me about your vehicle and how you drive it, and I’ll point you to the right one.
- Absorbs rock chips, scratches, and road rash
- Takes the etching and staining from contamination like bird droppings, so the paint underneath stays protected
- Self-healing topcoat for minor scratches and swirls
- Windshield PPF for added protection against chips
- Safe removal of old or damaged film

PPF Coverage Options
Highway miles, construction zones, and gravel lines throw debris at your front end every day. Choose the coverage that fits how you drive.
Front-End PPF
High-impact coverage for the bumper, hood, fenders, and mirrors, the panels that take the most hits.
Full-Body PPF
Coverage for every painted panel. Ideal if you want the most complete protection for a vehicle you plan to keep.
PPF + Paint Correction
I can correct the paint before the film goes on, so you lock in the best finish your paint can give instead of sealing in swirls. Not every scratch or swirl can be removed, since correction only takes a small amount of clear coat, and I’ll tell you what to expect at your inspection. PPF also helps hide minor imperfections that correction or a ceramic coating alone will not.

How I Install It
Film only looks invisible when the prep and the install are right. Every vehicle gets the same careful process.
- Consultation & inspection: we go over your goals, I inspect the paint, and we pick the right coverage.
- Decontamination & prep: multi-stage wash, iron decontamination, clay bar treatment, and panel prep so the film bonds flawlessly.
- Precision install & cure: film is stretched, tucked, and post-heated with careful trimming to protect your paint, then inspected before handover.
How I Make PPF Last
Edges are where PPF fails. Before any film goes on, I wipe down every edge until it’s free of dirt and grime, so the film can wrap around and grip, and I seal the edges at the end. A front-end job usually takes 2 to 3 days, including the wash, prep and edge sealing.
Final inspection. Before you pick up, I check every panel for lifted edges and air bubbles and make sure your paint looks better than when it came in. Unwrapped edges, panels that aren’t lined up, and bubbles left behind are the problems I see most on PPF installs, and they don’t leave my shop.
Most popular job: front-end PPF on full-size trucks like the F-150 and Silverado, whose big grilles and wide hoods take a beating on 101 and back roads.
Hardest panel so far: a Toyota Supra hood. A panel that size leaves more room for contamination, and its complex curves need just the right amount of stretch so the film doesn’t fail.

PPF Questions
Does PPF protect against rock chips?
Yes, that is its main job. The film absorbs everyday impacts that would otherwise chip your paint. Very large impacts can still damage film, so I help you choose coverage that matches how and where you drive.
Is PPF the same as a ceramic coating?
No. PPF is a physical film that guards against chips and scratches. A ceramic coating is a liquid-applied layer that adds gloss and makes the surface hydrophobic. Many customers get both on the same vehicle. MiracleCoat advises against coating new film, because the film’s topcoat will not hold a coating at first. After about a year, when the topcoat starts to wear, a coating can be added to bring the film back to life.
Should I choose front-end or full-body coverage?
If you commute on the highway or through gravel and construction zones, front-end coverage (bumper, hood, fenders, mirrors, and often the windshield) takes the worst of it and is a smart starting point. If you plan to keep the vehicle for years, or you want every panel guarded from door dings, scuffs, and road rash, full-body is the way to go. Either way, I inspect your paint first and give you an honest recommendation, not the biggest package.
Can PPF change the color of my vehicle?
Yes. Color change PPF gives you a new color and the same self-healing protection in one film.
Can old or damaged PPF be removed?
Yes. I remove old or damaged film and can follow it with paint correction and a fresh ceramic coating or new film.
Which areas do you serve?
